Special Message
Mrs. Akie Abe, First Lady of Japan
Good afternoon to all Toastmasters Club members.
I am AkieAbe.

Though I had been invited to attend today, I had a previous commitment so instead I am sending you my congratulations and a short message.

Congratulations for holding the District 76 Fall Conference today!
Seeing the home page, I felt my heart dance with the fun you are all going to have.

For all of you learning public speech and leadership, I am sure you know the importance of humor. I also have experienced in-depth the importance of humor.

In the past in my home town of Shimonoseki, I served as a radio personality by the name of “Akkie” for the community FM station,
“COME ON! FM”
At that time, I often tried to use humor in creating this program in order to draw out those who were being featured and to attract interest for all those listening. If I had know that there was an organization at Toastmasters to practice public speaking, I might have had learned with all of you.

Personally I often get involved in supporting elections of other candidates, besides my husband.I have heard that Toastmasters International started in the USA and that many presidential candidates have practiced their public speaking through this organization, so I truly feel the greatness of Toastmasters!

Among the Japanese members, I am most impressed by all of your enthusiasm to learn hearing that some of you have had experience in running for election. I know that there is a need to practice one’ s public speaking, but in Japan I must say that we do not have many places where one can.

Knowing that you are all practicing to improve your speech and communication on a daily basis, I truly think that you belong to a great organization. Moreover, I feel you are all most fortunate to enjoy learning the use of humor at this Fall Conference.
I am most impressed by Toastmasters organization.
I am hoping that you will all enjoy learning and growing at this Fall Conference, and I wish to end my greetings to you all by praying for the major success of this event.
Thank you for your kind attention.
Akie Abe

Following the thoughts of world famous South Pole English explorer,
Sir Arnest Shackelton,

We need Toastmasters!
You neither get support nor reward from the clubs.
Innovative works with no precedence, all in a days work:
Trial and error, slight hostility and never-ending discussions…
But at the end of the day, when we complete an event successfully, we all deserve to get honor, praise, and satisfaction.

Someone once said, "Toastmasters is a playground for grown ups." But I believe that the District Conference, rather, is a "cultural festival for grown up's". What do you think? And if it is a festival, you can enjoy it, too!
There are 6 contestants, a large audience who praises and celebrates them, and then there's us, the"production cast members," the organizers. "Cast members” are not servants who devote themselves selflessly to the event. They don’t even have to be super heroes with strong, excellent leadership skills. Their job is merely to show respect to the contestants, offer the participants hospitality, and above all, participate in the festivities.
We know that touching speeches need thorough preparation. So it goes without saying that the contestants will only be satisfied with a thorough and sophisticated execution of the contest.

But it is also important to note that those who work very hard to support this event from backstage deserve our applause as well.
After the event, we hope everyone will say with a smile
" All you need is laugh! "

Dear District 76 Toastmasters and Guests

Welcome to our 2014 District 76 Fall Conference and Humorous Speech Contest!!!
In my capacity as Conference Chair, it is my great honor to welcome you all. On behalf of all the Committee members, I would like to thank you for your support and cooperation.

3 years ago, when I attended the World Conference in Las Vegas, I had heard this phrase, “Toastmasters, where leaders are made.” I didn’t know the actual meaning then, but I do understand what it means now. A year ago I was not a leader, however, since then, I have learned a great deal about leadership, and about organizing a great event. This has been a valuable life experience for me.

However, when IPDG Ohmi, asked me to be the 2014 Fall Conference Chair, I flatly refused. The reason for my refusal was a scheduled surgery. But to tell the truth, I just didn’t have the confidence to take on this role, and I was just looking for a way out.

After my operation, some members were waiting for me at the hospital. So, after long and thoughtful consideration, I finally made up my mind to take on the challenge. My goal was to boldly make this event one of the best conferences we have ever had. This is what I want to share with you today.

I have attended several world conferences in Hong Kong, Shanghai and Taiwan. From those trips, I started dreaming about raising our District 76 conference to the level of World Conference so that our members could benefit from this experience.

I am happy to report that we, the committee members, have implemented some great new features, for instance, the new online individual registration, offering original T-shirts and polo shirts, and up to 12 workshop sessions among other things. Also, all participants will receive an original bag, a file, and a badge when they come to the reception desk.

This year also, our top priority is to welcome as many members as possible to the Fall Conference. Our vision for the future is to continue building a strong District 76. As a result, we have put great effort into making this event an affordable one for everyone.

I am looking forward to meeting you all at the Conference. Let’s enjoy, learn and laugh together!

“A sense of humor is part of the art of leadership, of getting along with people, of getting things done,” by Dwight Eisenhower, the 34th President of The United States
Looking back on my life, humor was always a great help in my life. It reduced my pains by half, while at the same time doubling my joys.

The 2014 Fall Conference`s “All you need is laugh!” theme, brought a smile to my face, because it represents exactly my own philosophy in life!
The centerpiece of this Conference is the Japanese and the English speech contests. In order to reach the top, a great number of contestants ploughed their way from Hokkaido to Okinawa. They have faced struggles, they cried and laughed pursuing the essence of humorous speeches and humor itself in the process.

What did they find? How could they use what they found in their daily life? How could they use humor in their leadership?
During this Fall Conference, why don`t we talk with many fellow members from all over the country? Let me join you, and we can enjoy talking together.

All you need is laugh!

Dear Members and guests of District 76,

Greetings!

This is my great honor to welcome all of you to the District 76 Fall Conference in Tokyo!

The conference will be full of excitement and amazing events, such as contests, workshops, and parties. The conference steering committee members have done great deal of excellent preparation for you. Their hard work and planning is guaranteed to make each event you participate in an unforgettable opportunity to learn and to grow as effective public speakers and as leaders! Please join us and be a part of this exciting event!

When I participated the District 76 Conference for the first time, it was big surprise for me.

Before that, my Toastmasters world meant only my club. The club was great, but it was a small world. At the Conference, I was so surprised to see so many Toastmasters from all over the nation and they were so friendly. Everybody kindly shared learning, excitement, and joy with me. My Toastmasters world expanded!

I see Toastmasters as a playground for grown-ups. In a playground, participation is key. If you participate more, you will get more from it. It means you will get more friends, you will get more knowledge, and you will get more enjoyment!

This term, we, District 76, will support all members on the basis of the three pillars which I laid out at the Spring Conference in Saitama, OPEN, CONNECT, and SUPPORT. The Conference is an opportunity to be OPEN to different viewpoints, an opportunity to CONNECT with other members, and an opportunity to SUPPORT one another as we challenge ourselves to achieve higher goals. Please come and join us!

To all of the Toastmasters in District 76, I would like to thank you for the honor of being the first World Champion of Public Speaking to visit your District.

I am also thrilled that with the invitation to participate in the 2014 District 76 Fall Conference, I have my first opportunity to visit Japan. I cannot think of a better way to be introduced to Japan than with hundreds of new Toastmaster friends!

I am excited to share with you the many communication and leadership lessons I have learned through Toastmasters. I know that by working together and sharing our knowledge we can help everyone benefit from their Toastmasters experience. I also know that as each person benefits through their Toastmasters experience, we build a better world, one person at a time.

I hope to contribute to the success of your Fall Conference and help make it the best conference District 76 has ever had!

Sincerely,

Lance Miller

Greetings, Members and Friends of District 76!

Congratulations on the occasion of the district’s Fall Conference on November 15-17, 2014!

First of all, I am happy to have the opportunity to serve you as Region 13 Advisor 2014-2015. District 76 belongs to Region 13, which is the fastest growing region, standing out among the 14 regions in Toastmasters International, and District 76 is one of the key players to the amazing growth of the region along with the other seven districts in India, Taiwan, Sri Lanka, China and Korea.

District 76 has accomplished an awesome achievement that its member retention rate has been Number One for the last 10 years since 2004, when the district became full-fledged. Toastmasters all over the world are amazed at the magnificent achievements. I believe this is a result of the fact that Toastmasters in the district are satisfied with club activities to hone skills of communication and leadership. I hope that Toastmasters’ education programs are considered worth for lifelong education in the district.

Toastmasters’ District Mission clearly says “We build new clubs and support all clubs in achieving excellence.” Therefore, this conference helps raise name recognition of the organization further and gives an opportunity to showcase the skills that you have learned and honed to the outside world. I hope this makes people understand Toastmasters better in Japan and new clubs will be built in several places.

I hope you find Toastmasters a life-long training hall or “Jinsei Dojyo” to enrich your experience.

Lastly, I would like to express my sincere appreciation to all those involved for their efforts in organizing this conference and wish you every success.

2013-2015 International Director, Region 13

Toastmasters of District 76,
Greetings!

The colors of fall in its glory, provides a wonderful spectrum for the Fall Conference of District 76. The learning, fun and laughter add to the colors that members can. It provides members an opportunity to hone their leadership skills and learn important lessons of leadership.

The recipe for success for any leader lies in recognizing their vision. If they can articulate to themselves what they wish to achieve and the benefit that they can provide through this vision, the likelihood of achieving success increases manifold. As Walt Disney put it, “If you can dream it, you can do it.”

Albert Schweitzer said, “I don’t know what your destiny will be, but one thing I know: The ones among you who will be really happy are those who have sought and found how to serve.” Understanding that Toastmasters is an organization that promotes service leadership, shall help every leader better prepare for their role. When every decision made and every action taken is with the aim to provide service, the result will be happy and satisfied members.

In our mundane existence, humor in communication immediately helps build rapport with our audience and captures their attention. Humor helps dissipate tension and creates an ambience of friendship and goodwill. In Toastmasters, we learn to use clean humor, free of controversy and innuendo, in our speeches. The humorous speech contest helps us learn this valuable skill from the best in the District. ‘All you need is laugh’, to make learning a joyful experience!

Enjoy the manifold colors that will be in glorious display all through the conference! Laugh and learn as Conference Chair Kozue Sakai and her team bring together a splendid event!

My best wishes to District Governor DTM Hisashi Watanabe, LGET DTM Kiminari Azuma and LGM DTM Daijiro Shinohara for a successful conference that shall empower, educate and entertain!

To the members and guests of District 76:
On behalf of the World Headquarters staff and Toastmasters throughout the world, I extend our best wishes for your November 2014 Conference!

I encourage you to take this opportunity to learn from the presenters and sessions and ask yourself:

• What can you take back to your club that will help you better provide an improved member experience?
• What can you learn personally to help you become a better leader and communicator?

Be sure to attend at least one session that focuses on club quality and the member experience. Take notes and return to your club with new ideas. Attend at least one session that will help you personally. And immediately following the conference, create an action plan for self-improvement.

I wish you continued success during this year and in the future.

Sincerely,

Dear District 76 leaders and guests

When I registered for my first district conference in 1996, I didn't know what to expect. I worried about feeling left out, and I hoped I would not leave the conference feeling disappointed. But there was no need for worry. As soon as I finished registering at the front desk, it happened: The conference bug hit me and it has remained with me ever since.

Whether you are a first-timer or have been attending conferences for many years, what unites all attendees is their desire to have fun and take advantage of the experience. What amazes me still is that the conference experience is not just the result of the endless hard work of the organizing committee, although that plays a crucial part in making it successful; it is the collective enthusiasm and energy of every one attending, including you.

District conferences are an amazing platform to fortifying the member experience and are a stepping stone toward understanding the organization. Take full advantage of it to meet leaders, get educated and – most importantly– have fun! Because after all, by participating, you control not only your experience but the experience of other attendees
.
I wish your district great success and all the members a fun-filled, exciting conference.
